Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What should I do if the program runs slowly or I get an out-of-memory error?

A: Check that your PC meets minimum system requirements as listed on the CD package as Savage uses your computer's memory (RAM) to play videos, animations and sound. If Savage runs slowly or you see out-of-memory errors, Savage may not have enough memory. Suggestions for speeding the application up:
  •
  • close all TSR (Terminate and Stay Resident) applications, such as an antiviral program
  •
  • set up a permanent Windows swap file of 10 to 20 meg
  •
  • optimize your hard disk by running a disk defragmentation program
  •
  • add more RAM (memory) to your computer
  •
  • add a cache on the Smartdrive line in your autoexec.bat file (a cache of 2048Kb is recomended)
  •
  • set your video to a lower resolution and/or color setting

Q: I seem to be having display problems. What can I do?

A: Try changing the display settings to SVGA 640 x 480 with 256 colors. If that does not clear up the problem, obtain updated drivers from your video card manufacturer.

    To change the video driver to SVGA 640 x 480 x 256:
    In Win 3.11:
  •
  • go to Main\ Windows\ Setup
  •
  • click on Options\ Change System Settings
  •
  • hit the scroll button on the display box and scroll to SVGA 640 x 480 x 256

    In Win 95:
  •
  • select Start\ Settings\ Control Panel
  •
  • select Display\ Settings tab
  •
  • set the display area to 640 x 480, the color palette to 256, and the video adapter to SVGA

Q: What can I do if the display problems persist?

A: In some situations, Savage may encounter video display problems when using high resolution video drivers from various video card manufacturers. The problems may include a garbled screen, a garbled video or the software may crash. If you encounter problems like these and changing the display settings does not help:
  •
  • obtain updated drivers from your video card manufacturer
  •
  • If you are using an ATI Mach 64, please read the README.WRI file on the CD.

Q: Why won't the sound play?

A: Confirm that the speakers are on and the volume is turn up. (In Win 95, double-click on the speaker icon on the taskbar) If the volume is turned up and you still hear no sounds, something may be wrong with your audio card installation.

If you have both an audio card and special software that bypasses the audio card to play sounds through the PC speaker, remove or disable the special software (the PC speaker driver). Savage is not meant to run with just the PC internal speaker or any combination of that speaker and special software.

A: If you get this error message. There are 2 files in your Windows system directory that need to be up-to-date . If these files are current, then you will want to make sure that your SYSTEM.INI file contains following sections and entries:
  •
  • [Drivers]
    wavemapper=msacm.drv
  •
  • [MSACM]
    install=msadpcm.acm
